Our Hacktacular Supreme Court

Justice Anthony Kennedy strongly opposed the individual mandate in the Affordable Care Act, arguing that it “changes the relationship of the federal government to the individual in the very fundamental way.” It’s a little late in the day to express concerns about where the individual stands in relationship to the federal government, don’t you think? Undeclared wars, bank bailouts, extraordinary rendition — nobody was too concerned about individual liberties with regard to those monstrosities. This individual has absolutely no control over the behavior of the federal government. This individual is a powerless serf, as are all of you. All we can do is vote for liberal minded candidates, such as may be found, and watch helplessly as they buckle under to the machine.

Kennedy’s Jeffersonian concern for individual rights would be touching if it wasn’t so insincere and out of date. Who the hell is he trying to kid?

Meanwhile, strip searching people guilty of simple misdemeanors is okay. Apparently that doesn’t change the relationship of the individual to the federal government in any fundamental way. Health insurance out, rectal searches in. Roger that.

Cynicism is the only proper attitude for the thinking individual these days. If you aren’t a cynic, I have but one question for you: Why not?

(Well, well, looky here. Protesters were pepper-sprayed yesterday. I wonder, did someone think to search their alimentary canals, you know, just ’cause?)
