Banana Republic USA

Digby already has this, but it bears repeating. Welcome to Banana Republic USA:

From the Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction, July 27, 2010:

“Weaknesses in DoD’s financial and management controls left it unable to properly account for $8.7 billion of the $9.1 billion in DFI funds it received for reconstruction activities in Iraq. This situation occurred because most DoD organizations receiving DFI funds did not establish the required Department of the Treasury accounts and no DoD organization was designated as the executive agent for managing the use of DFI funds. The breakdown in controls left the funds vulnerable to inappropriate uses and undetected loss.”

Well, that settles it. We’re simply going to have to cut entitlements now.

This book ends quite nicely with last week’s story that there may be as many as 6,600 misplaced graves at Arlington. We can’t seem to do anything right these days. This is the kind of shit that happens in a country like Nicaragua under the Somoza dictatorship or the Philippines under Ferdinand Marcos. We’re basically a corrupt and incompetent a third world country with a gigantic military and a Visa card (a maxed out Visa card, I might add).
